Friends and Family Test

Have you recently been treated at MKUH or used one of our services? Then we would greatly appreciate it if you were able to complete a Friends and Family Test.

You will find these forms on our wards, in our outpatient departments and in the Emergency Department. If you cannot find one, please ask a member of staff.

Your feedback helps us to improve the quality of care we provide.

What do the results mean?

The friends and family test ask patients to answer the following question:

‘How likely is it that you would recommend our ward/department to friends or family if they needed similar care or treatment?’

The options on the Friends and Family Test are:

  • Extremely likely
  • Likely
  • Neither likely nor unlikely
  • Unlikely
  • Extremely unlikely
  • Don’t know

We also ask about what was good about your care, and what we can do better. We read all the comments made and use them to improve services and care.

As a hospital, we are required to show:

  • The percentage of people who would recommend our services
  • The percentage who would not recommend our services

We calculate these percentage figures by dividing the number of people who are ‘likely or extremely likely’ or ‘unlikely and extremely unlikely’ by the total number of responses. Then we multiply the result by 100 to get a percentage.

MKUH receives approximately 22,000 Friends and Family Test responses every year. The recommended rate for hospitals is 94%.

The information and comments you provide are fed back to all the services. Your opinions matter to us and we take them very seriously.
