Bowel Preparation
If you are having a colonoscopy, flexible sigmoidoscopy or small bowel capsule endoscopy, you will need to take a bowel preparation (laxative) to clear your bowel before the procedure.
The type of bowel preparation will depend on the procedure you are having.
It is vital to have a cleansed bowel for your procedure to allow the endoscopist to have a clear view of the inner lining of your bowel, which is important for accurate diagnosis and treatment.
As soon as we receive your referral; your bowel preparation will be sent to you, by post, along with some instructions on how to take your bowel preparation. These includes (but is not limited to):
- Stopping certain medications (up to 7 days before your procedure)
- Adjusting diet (up to 5 days before your procedure)
- Fasting Instructions
- Bowel preparation instructions
Please ensure that you read and follow the instructions carefully as your procedure may have to be cancelled and/or repeated at another time if your bowel is not clean enough.
You should only take your bowel preparation for your procedure appointment (not your clinic appointment).
