Stoma Care

What is the Stoma Care Nursing Service?

The Milton Keynes Stoma Care Nursing Service are a team of four Specialist Nurses and an Administrator.

We are available to help prepare you and your family to adjust to life, both physically and psychologically, when you require stoma formation. We are here to support you throughout treatment, before and after surgery and in the community. The service is available to adults, babies and children with any type of stoma (ileostomy, colostomy or urostomy) in the Milton Keynes area. We see patients who have a new or established stoma, and those who have moved to the area who would like a review. We also provide ongoing support and advice for patients living with an ileo anal pouch.

What do we offer?

  • Pre-booked, nurse led clinics on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon.
  • Stoma care advice, information and support for you and your relatives or carers.
  • Information and advice on appropriate stoma care products and services.
  • Education for members of the wider team that are involved in your care.

Clinics/appointments

We run our nurse-led clinics on Thursday morning and Friday afternoon. Please contact us to book an appointment and ensure you bring one of your stoma bags with you.

We aim to:

  • See you before your operation following your pre-operative assessment appointment, to offer you specific information regarding your surgery and stoma formation.
  • Mark the most appropriate site for your stoma on the morning of admission to hospital (this may not be possible if your surgery is carried out as an emergency).
  • See you on the ward during your hospital stay to teach you how to manage your stoma, answer questions and offer advice and support.
  • Supply you with the appropriate equipment and information you will require following discharge home and advice on how to obtain your stoma supplies in the future (this will be through a free delivery service or through your chemist).
  • Arrange a follow up home visit appointment within seven days of discharge.
  • Continue your follow up appointments in our nurse-led clinics.
  • Ensure you have direct access to the stoma care service while you have a stoma.
