Milton Keynes University Hospital to launch a new Community Diabetic Eye Screening Service
We are pleased to announce that Bedfordshire, Luton, and Milton Keynes (BLMK) have been awarded the NHS England contract to deliver Diabetic Eye Screening services to over 80,000 diabetic patients.
As part of this contract, Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) will be offering new Diabetic Eye Screening services at various community locations. With capacity to screen over 60 patients daily, this service will provide accessible screening closer to home for patients where clinically appropriate. Routine screening and specialised clinics will continue to be available at the main hospital site.
The new community service will officially launch on Monday 21 October. Upon launch, the service will be available in several different community settings, including:
- Stoke Goldington Village Hall, Monday 4 November 2024
- 1st Scouts Leighton Buzzard, Monday 11 November 2024
- The Mead Centre, Newport Pagnell, Monday 18 November 2024
Offering screening within the community helps to detect early stages of Diabetic Retinopathy and has the probability to increase attendance rates to reduce sight loss.
Kirsty Kirby, Programme Manager at MKUH, stated: “We are excited to introduce community Diabetic Eye Screening services across BLMK. Our aim is to make screening more accessible to all patients and ensure timely detection of Diabetic Retinopathy. We hope this initiative will lead to better patient engagement and improve health outcomes for the diabetic community.”
In addition to the community screening locations, patients will now have the option to schedule online bookings for their routine check-up appointments. This new booking system enables us to streamline the process of patients being seen in an efficient and timely manner and offers greater flexibility and convenience for patients.
