Maxillofacial and Orthodontic teams going for green
Over the last few months, the Trust’s Maxillofacial and Orthodontic team in Outpatients have been channelling their creative thinking to support the Trust’s sustainability agenda, by taking part in the Green Impact in Dentistry initiative.
Green Impact, developed by the Charity Students Organising for Sustainability (SOS UK), is a sustainability accreditation scheme with an audit and awards element. It runs in many different sectors, including dentistry. Through Green Impact, dental practices can access support, and can choose to work towards a bronze, silver or gold level accreditation, evidencing their commitment to being a responsible healthcare business.
The team have introduced a range of projects and initiatives to reduce their carbon footprint and move towards a more sustainable way of working. Some of this work includes:
- Organising a sustainable lunch where team members brought in food that has been home grown or purchased from nearby to reduce its carbon footprint. All food was transferred in reusable containers to gain extra points.
- Holding a raffle where unwanted gifts were auctioned off, raising £81 for a sustainability charity.
- Removing some single use plastic items from their surgical kits and replacing with sterilisable items – with plans to reduce more over the coming months.
The programme is being led by Danielle White, Senior Specialist Dental Nurse, who is the designated Green Impact Lead for the department.
