An architect’s impression of a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital at MKUH

On 29 July, the Chancellor announced in the House of Commons a review of the New Hospital Programme (NHP) to ensure it has a thorough, realistic, and costed timetable for delivery. It was confirmed last week that the development of a new Women’s and Children’s Hospital with additional surgical capacity at Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) will be included in the scope of this review.

The review, requested by the Chancellor of the Exchequer and the Secretary of State for Health & Social Care, will be jointly led and resourced by the Department of Health and Social Care (DHSC), NHS England (NHSE), and HM Treasury (HMT).

As a Trust, we welcome this review and the government’s commitment to providing realistic timelines and adequate funding for projects across the country. We remain dedicated to delivering an acute hospital that meets the future growth and healthcare needs of our local community. We are optimistic that the critical need for a new Women’s and Children’s facility, with additional surgical capacity at MKUH, will be understood and recognised by all stakeholders involved.

Funding has already been provided for all enabling projects necessary to support the delivery of our new Women’s and Children’s Hospital, and work on these projects is already underway. This includes the construction of a new imaging centre, an additional multi-storey car park, and the provision to increase the high-voltage main power supply to the hospital.

The government’s review of the New Hospital Programme will be considered within the wider Spending Review process, where decisions on the outcome will be taken.
