Radiotherapy Centre Update: Construction remains on schedule at mid-way point
The delivery of a new Radiotherapy Centre at the hospital has reached its construction halfway point, and we are pleased to hear from our site contractor Morgan Sindall that this project remains on track for full on-time completion, ready to be kitted out and opened in 2024.
The Radiotherapy Centre will be a welcome addition to our current cancer service offering, providing access to further care and treatment closer to home for many Milton Keynes residents. The new facility will include a state-of-the-art medical linear accelerator (LINAC) bunker, a radiotherapy planning CT scanner area and purpose-built consultation rooms.
Morgan Sindall continues to work closely with our Strategic Estate Team to ensure the smooth running of this project. Those that have had a glimpse of the site will see that the exterior walls of the building are now in place, and insulation is currently being installed. In recent months we saw several key milestones in the building’s construction, including:
- the last piece of steelwork being mounted into place in April, completing the structural framework of the building. This was celebrated in true construction tradition with a Topping Out ceremony.
- in June, we saw the final concrete pour of the building’s LINAC treatment rooms, with walls up to 2.7m thick. These will house the medical linear accelerator (LINAC).
- nearly all the building’s external walls were erected into place in July, and work began on the building link corridor into the Cancer Centre.
The construction team are now continuing with the hard work and currently working to deliver:
- rendering of the new building.
- installation of the base plate in the LINAC treatment room for the installation of the medical linear accelerator (LINAC).
- construction on internal walls, and fitting out of the building.
- installation on windows and doors.
- the final stage to break through into the Cancer Centre to connect the building to the rest of the hospital via a link corridor.
- Landscaping of garden spaces.
Morgan Sindall is scheduled to hand over the completed construction of the building in spring 2024, ready for internal setup and service opening in 2024.
Charity appeal launched for Radiotherapy Wellbeing Hub
Further to the work to complete the construction of the Radiotherapy Centre, the Milton Keynes Hospital Charity is supporting the hospital to take its Cancer Care services one step further with a Radiotherapy Wellbeing Hub Appeal.
AT MKUH, our ambition is to offer those receiving cancer treatment more than just the clinical care they need. Through the vital fundraising activities of the hospital charity, the Trust will look to develop an additional purpose-built space away from clinical areas in the Radiotherapy building’s landscape gardens, where patients can receive much-needed wellbeing support.
