Percutaneous Coronary Intervention Service opens at MKUH
As part of the Trust’s ongoing expansion plans to meet the healthcare needs of the local community, we have recently launched a new Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) service to patients across Milton Keynes.
The procedure, which involves placing a stent into the arteries of the heart, is recommended to patients following the diagnosis of a narrowed artery. Previously, patients would have to travel to neighbouring hospitals for their treatment, often resulting in delays and a poor experience for both the individual and their families.
The service at MKUH is initially delivering elective procedures two days per week to ensure the new process can be fully embedded across the clinical teams and wider hospital, with plans to increase capacity over the coming months and expand into inpatient procedures. The service is located in the hospital’s cardiac catheter lab adjacent to the cardiology department, with the majority of patients being treated and discharged the same day.
Simon Nicholson, Associate Director of Operations for Medicine, said: “To be able to offer and deliver Percutaneous Coronary Intervention (PCI) services to our patients is a fantastic achievement for our Cardiology team in collaboration with Oxford University Hospital, dramatically improving both the care and experience our patients receive.
“The introduction of PCI on the hospital site is another important step in ensuring more of our patients are able to receive all of their care and treatment at MKUH and we are excited to continue to grow this vital service over the coming months.”
