Could you be one of our Breastfeeding Peer Support Volunteers?
Update as of 11 February 2025: We’re thrilled to say we’ve reached the maximum number of applications and will be in touch with those in due course. Thank you to everyone that applied.
Here at MKUH we are on the look out for some very special volunteers who will support new parents and their babies as they settle into breastfeeding their little ones in the early days.
We are a fully accredited Baby Friendly trust and are looking for passionate positive and friendly people (over 18) who have breastfed themselves exclusively for at least six months.
You’ll receive comprehensive training from our infant feeding lead midwife and will be supported every step of the way as you support new parents on their breastfeeding journey.
Lorraine, one of our current breastfeeding peer support volunteers is a real advocate for the role.
“I’m a mum of five and breastfed four of my children, including my youngest Jaxon, who has Down’s Syndrome, which can sometimes make it difficult but I breastfed him successfully for 19 months,” says Lorraine.
“Every baby is different, so every breastfeeding journey is different too.
“It’s wonderful to be able to help others settle into breastfeeding. As dedicated volunteers, we often have more time to spend with new parents. We’re there to offer advice and listen to their concerns. Often they just need a confidence boost and someone to reassure them they are doing things right.”
Michelle Hancock, infant feeding lead midwife adds, “It’s wonderful to have breastfeeding peer supporters on the ward. They are able to bring their own knowledge and experience and can spend much longer with parents. Several of our volunteers have gone on to train as midwives as they loved the environment so much.”
