A&E research contributes to change in NICE Guidelines

Date: 16/06/2023

A research study that the Milton Keynes University Hospital (MKUH) Emergency Department (ED) has participated in has led to a change in National Institute for Health and Care Excellence (NICE) guidelines, improving the care of adults who attend ED with head injuries.

In May, NICE published an updated guideline on the management of head injury. Based on data from the CRASH-3 and subsequent trials, the guideline now recommends consideration of an intravenous tranexamic acid bolus within 2 hours of injury in people with suspected moderate or severe traumatic brain injury, even when no extracranial bleeding is evident.

The CRASH trials collaboration has improved care for patients in the UK and worldwide and is building the evidence base for future improvements.

Thank you to the Emergency Department and to all patients who participated.
