Tibio Femoral Microfracture Surgery and Rehabilitation

General Information

Microfracture surgery is a technique used to treat limited areas of damaged cartilage within the knee. Microfracture creates small holes in the bone. This stimulates new cartilage growth in a small area of damaged cartilage. This is an arthroscopic operation, also known as keyhole surgery, therefore it is often done as a day case. It is very important to engage in a rehabilitation programme guided by your physiotherapist following this operation. This will optimise the success of the operation.

Advice Following Microfracture Surgery

Following this operation you will need to use crutches. Your physiotherapist will teach you to use these and advise you as to how long you will have to use them for.

To reduce pain and swelling wrap a bag of ice, or frozen peas, in a tea towel. Elevate your leg to above hip height and mould the ice pack around the knee. Leave for 15 minutes and repeat 3-4 times a day. Never put ice directly on the skin or leave an ice pack on for longer than 20 minutes as this can result in an ice burn.

Continuing your rehabilitation
You will be referred to see a physiotherapist as an outpatient once you are discharged from hospital. They will work with you to progress your strength, range of movement and mobility as appropriate.

Exercise 1
1. Lie on your back with your legs out straight.
2. Keep your kneecap pointed toward the ceiling throughout the exercise.
3. Slowly slide your foot back toward your buttocks, bending your knee and hip.
4. Slower lower the leg to the starting position.
Repeat _____ times.

Exercise 2
1. Squeeze buttocks together. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds then relax.
Repeat _____ times.

Exercise 3
1. Sit on a firm flat surface with your legs straight and relaxed.
2. With your hand, move your kneecap from side to side.
3. With your hand, move your kneecap up and down.
Repeat _____ times.

Exercise 4
1. Sit on a firm flat surface with the knee of your uninvolved leg bent and your hands behind you for support.
2. Straighten your involved leg as much as possible, tightening the muscles on top of your thigh.
3. Hold for 5 seconds, then relax.

Repeat _____ times.

Exercise 5
1. Bend the uninvolved leg, and keep the involved leg straight.
2. Straighten the involved leg as much as possible, tightening the muscles on top of the thigh.
3. Raise your heel off the surface approximately four inches.
4. Hold for five seconds, then slowly return to the starting position and relax.
Repeat _____ times.
