What is the Bronchiectasis Group?
You have been referred to the Bronchiectasis group because you have been diagnosed as having bronchiectasis. Your doctor believes that you will benefit from learning some special breathing exercises to help clear the sputum from your chest. The bronchiectasis group is an advice group where you will learn more about your bronchiectasis and learn how to do special breathing exercises to clear sputum from your chest.

About your physiotherapy appointment
On arrival please inform the reception staff that you are here. The group lasts 60 minutes. You will be required to fill in some forms before the group, so please arrive 10 minutes early to allow you to do this. Please bring an up to date list of all your medication including your inhalers and bring your inhalers with you. If you arrive late, you will not be allowed into the group and you will need to re-book onto another group. If you are unable to attend your appointment please telephone reception to advise them.

If you do not inform us you are unable to attend your first appointment you will be discharged back to your referring Doctor or GP.

More about the group
There will be others in the group who have bronchiectasis and a physiotherapist will lead the group giving advice and education about your condition. You will be seated throughout and there will be no physical exercises to do. Water is available to drink and there is a toilet should you need one. You will learn to do a special breathing exercise which you will practice with others during the group. Once you have learnt the special breathing exercise in the group it is important that you practice this at home every day as it will help clear your chest.

The group session will also cover general lifestyle advice for someone with bronchiectasis so that you can learn how to manage your condition well at home. After you have been to the group you will be given a follow up appointment with a physiotherapist who will check that you are performing the breathing exercises correctly. Your bronchiectasis may require other physiotherapy treatment and this will be discussed and agreed with you at your follow up appointment.

Can I bring someone with me?
Yes, you may bring a partner or carer with you to the group.

What should I bring?
• Any correspondence relating to your condition such as clinic appointments or letters regarding previous treatments.
• A list of current medications and your inhalers.
• Money for parking if you will be driving to your appointment or your blue badge if you have one.

If you need them please bring your reading glasses.

Additional Information
• Managing your condition really well at home depends on many factors including:
• Following the advice of your physiotherapist, and attending your appointments at the times required.
• Performing your special breathing exercises every day.
• Maintaining a healthy weight, eating a balanced diet, stopping smoking, taking your medication, keeping hydrated and being physically active and exercising.

How to find us
When entering the hospital grounds turn left towards the Main Reception. The multi-storey car park is then on your left, you can park on the ground and first floor. Please note parking is on a pay as you leave basis. The Main Reception for the hospital is opposite the multi-storey car park. Physiotherapy is located through the doorway to the left of the reception desk in Yellow Zone.

Who will have access to my records?
Any information that you give will be treated in strict confidence. Your physiotherapist may allow other physiotherapy staff, such as senior staff, access to your records when it is of benefit to you. Your personal details are stored on the physiotherapy computer database. Information is only released to others not involved in your care (e.g. solicitor, employer, etc.) with your written consent.
