Endoscopy Unit – things you need to know

With your appointment letter you will receive an information booklet about your procedure and the preparation you require. This will include instructions on how to manage other medical conditions relevant to the test such as diabetes, or medications such as anticoagulants and antiplatelets (blood thinning treatments). The information booklet advises on what you can expect during and after your test. Please take time to read it carefully.

If you need to change or cancel your appointment please call the booking office as soon as possible.

If you require a bowel preparation (for colonoscopies and flexible sigmoidoscopy) you will be sent the medication by post with an instruction leaflet.

If you are having sedation you will not be able to drive yourself. You will need to make arrangements for getting to the department and back home again. You will need a competent adult to accompany you home and you will need to be in the company of a competent adult overnight.
